The newly opened National Sandalwood Park

Any type of recreational park adds attraction to the city. People come to the park and be relaxing with surrounding greenery to boosting their energy with refreshing air. After a hectic day, I like to spend our evenings surrounded by nature at any possible time. National sandalwood garden is a newly created greenery zone in heart of the capital city near parliament and Ape Gama premice.

The Newly opened park

The park opening was held on 20 of July 2021 and we went there in the first week of August. The beauty of the park is mind-blowing and it was beyond my expectation in the evening. The sandalwood park is spread around 9 acres with 900 white sandalwood trees and 300 red sandalwood trees. This is the first and only sandalwood park in Sri Lanka.

The sandalwood trees are still small and those planted above 2 feet from the ground for the safety of the trees. I was shocked by the lighting system around the park. It was charming in my mind. When I am going there, it newly opened a recreational park, due to that it was totally clean. I hope, people will keep it in the same condition in the future too.

Why sandalwood?

I also wonder, why they choose sandalwood trees from tons of other varieties. Soo, I researched what are the specialties of this variety. My result was unexpected. Red and white sandalwood trees are faced the worst-case scenario in the last few decades. This tree has a special fragrance and it heals our skin. Because of that, Plenty of sandalwood tree was cutting by people for the cosmetic industry. This tree is used as a medicine in Ayurveda and the roots of the tree using to produce sandalwood oil. It was the biggest tret and it was a slow-growing tree. Due to that, amount of trees is rapidly reducing. Do you understand, how humans impact the destroy this nature?

Oxygen Booster

Apart from that, the main reason to choose sandalwood tree is, this tree produces a higher % of Oxygen compared to other plants. Oxygen is one of the Primary requirements, to survive on this planet earth. I understood it these two years more than any time in our life dealing with a worldwide pandemic.

Normally, The sandalwood tree is growing up to 10 feet in height and it takes more than 30 years. This park is an investment, we did for our future generation.

The milder breeze always blowing around, I think it happened because of the Bare lake which is in front of the park.

When I was passing time there, I realized how important sustainable lifestyle and reduce the plastic footprint to save other mother nature.

Go there and embrace how trees heal our soul even though we are in the middle of the concrete city.
